Reading Foundations for Beginners

UFLI Scope and Sequence (Ages 3-6) The Reading Foundations program is designed to help young learners build strong reading skills from the ground up. This engaging 9-week class is perfect for children who are just starting their reading journey or need extra support to develop their phonics and early literacy skills. Through fun activities, hands-on exercises, and individualized attention, we will ensure that every child has the foundation they need to become a confident, fluent reader.

What Will Be Taught?

Each week, we will focus on key areas of early literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, letter recognition, blending sounds, and more. Your child will: Learn the names and sounds of each letter, build simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, practice decoding and encoding skills (reading and spelling) Work with high-frequency words (heart words) Explore short and long vowel sounds and their impact on words, understand word patterns through blending drills and word chains

Topics Covered:

Phonemic Awareness: Recognizing and isolating sounds in words. Phonics: Learning how letters and sounds work together. Letter Formation: Writing letters correctly while associating sounds. Word Building: Blending sounds to create words and sentences. High-Frequency Words: Introducing heart words and how to decode them. Word Patterns: Understanding how words are built and beginning to read connected text.

Class Structure:

Each class is structured to balance focused lessons and interactive activities.

The class will be a mix of:

New Concepts: Short, engaging lessons where I introduce new concepts. Hands-on Activities: Children will engage in guided activities, such as letter and word building with flashcards, magnetic letters, and fun worksheets. Games & Activities: Educational games will help reinforce the concepts learned, such as word-building challenges, and letter-matching games.

One-on-One Attention:

During each class, I will make sure that each child gets the opportunity to work at their own pace. I’ll offer personalized guidance as they practice their skills, ensuring they understand each lesson before moving on to the next.

Teaching Style:

My teaching style is interactive, supportive, and encouraging. I believe that learning to read should be fun and enjoyable, so I incorporate lots of hands-on learning, visual aids, and games into each session. I create a safe, nurturing environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and celebrating their progress. Every child learns differently, and I adapt my approach to meet their needs, offering positive reinforcement and personalized guidance. Learner Interaction: In this class, learners will have plenty of opportunities to interact with me and each other.

Direct Interaction:

I will guide children through activities, offering one-on-one help where necessary. Games and Group Activities: Students will participate in small group activities, encouraging them to practice their reading skills with their peers. Live Feedback: I’ll provide immediate feedback as children work through tasks, correcting errors and praising their successes. Discussion: At the end of each class, we’ll have a short discussion where students can share what they learned and ask questions about the content. Visual and Audio Aids: I’ll use visual slides, songs, puppets to make lessons more engaging and support different learning styles. By the end of this course, your child will have a strong foundation in the key areas of reading and phonics, setting them up for success as they continue to grow as readers. The interactive nature of this class ensures that each child feels supported, engaged, and motivated throughout their reading journey!

Kermit is a great teacher and he is going to teach you all your letter sounds.  He loves to eat them up and get you to try and guess the sound they make when they are in his throat.  He's so funny!

Building Strong Reading and Spelling Foundations

UFLI Scope and Sequence (Ages 6-7)

Class Description:

Students refine their ability to link sounds to letters, decode words accurately and automatically, and expand their reading and spelling skills to include more complex words and connected text. They also practice reading and spelling irregular words, and develop fluency in oral reading. Over 33 engaging sessions, learners will receive explicit, systematic instruction that builds on foundational literacy skills such as phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Through interactive lessons and activities, your child will gain the skills and confidence they need to become a stronger, more confident reader.

Class Experience:

Throughout the course, students will work in a small-group setting to ensure personalized attention. Each lesson focuses on a key literacy skill, and lessons are structured to introduce new concepts, followed by guided practice and independent work. This ensures that every student has the chance to apply what they’ve learned in a supportive, encouraging environment.

What Will Be Taught?

Phonemic Awareness & Phonics: Learners will review letter-sound relationships, vowel patterns, digraphs, and more. They will practice decoding words, blending sounds, and identifying syllable patterns.

Fluency: Students will work on improving their reading speed and accuracy through repeated practice with both familiar and new words. Vocabulary: We will explore new words using context clues, word families, and prefixes and suffixes, allowing learners to expand their vocabulary in meaningful ways. Students will also learn spelling rules and gain a greater understanding of the English language.

How Is the Class Structured?

Each lesson begins with a brief review of previous material to ensure retention and provide a solid foundation for new learning. Direct Instruction follows, where concepts are taught explicitly and demonstrated using examples. Guided Practice allows students to work together with the instructor, practicing new skills and receiving feedback in real time. Independent Practice provides learners with the chance to practice on their own, solidifying their understanding. Wrap-Up gives time for reflection and quick check-ins to ensure each student is grasping the material.

How Will I Teach?

I use a multisensory approach, which means lessons are designed to engage all learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). I believe in creating a positive, supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Each session will be a safe space for learning. I incorporate interactive elements such as games, word sorts, and story maps to make learning fun while reinforcing key concepts. My style is structured yet flexible, adapting to the needs of each student. If a learner is struggling with a particular area, I’ll spend extra time reinforcing that skill.

How Much Will Learners Interact? Interactive Instruction: I will regularly ask questions and invite students to share their thoughts during lessons, encouraging them to engage with the material and each other. Group Activities: There will be small group tasks, such as word-building games and story discussions, where students can work together to reinforce their learning. Games & Activities: We’ll use fun, educational games like phonics bingo and reading comprehension quizzes to keep things exciting and provide hands-on practice.

Regular Feedback:

I’ll be actively engaged with each student, providing real-time feedback on their progress, guiding them when they’re stuck, and celebrating their successes! By the end of this class, students will have gained essential skills that will help them thrive in reading and spelling, with increased confidence and a love for learning.

Heart Word Heroes:                             Learn Irregular Sight Words

Grade 1

Although irregular words can be challenging, there are effective methods for teaching them. The good news is that, children can learn to decode most of the word, and they only have to learn one or two letters “by heart.”

In this fun and engaging class designed for first graders, students will learn to read and spell high-frequency irregular heart words — the words they need to know “by heart” because they don’t follow typical phonics rules. Using research-based strategies from the UFLI Foundations program (University of Florida Literacy Institute), this class gives young readers the tools to confidently recognize and write tricky words like "said," "was," "they," and more. Each class includes: A short, kid-friendly explanation of the heart word Interactive practice using visuals, writing, and repetition A chance to read and use the word in context Games, movement, and lots of encouragement! This course supports reading fluency, spelling, and confidence — and it’s perfect for early readers who are learning or reviewing tricky irregular words, High frequency words and Dolch/Fry. Each session will focus on 1–2 heart words. Words are introduced in a logical order following the UFLI scope & sequence.

Spelling Detectives: Solving the Mystery of Spelling Rules.

Grade 1

In this Grade 1 Spelling Class, we'll use the UFLI method to master important spelling rules. Through fun, interactive activities, students will learn to decode spelling patterns and build strong reading and writing skills.

In this 14-week course, learners will become Spelling Detectives, solving weekly “rule riddles” that help them understand how words are spelled and why. This class follows the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) method, which is a structured, systematic approach grounded in the science of reading. What will be taught? Learners will be introduced to key grade one spelling rules, including: Beginning and ending consonant blends Digraphs and trigraphs Vowel patterns (long/short vowels, silent e, vowel teams) Syllable types and how they affect spelling Common suffixes and spelling changes Simple doubling and dropping rules Word families and rule-based word sorts Each rule will be taught in an age-appropriate way, using phonemic awareness, phonics, and visual mapping strategies aligned with UFLI. Class Structure & Format Each weekly class includes: A short warm-up or review Direct instruction using slides and visuals Guided spelling rule discovery (we call these “clues” to solve!) Word building and decoding games (e.g., drag-and-drop letter tiles) Spelling and reading practice using real and nonsense words Light discussion and check-ins for comprehension Optional printable homework for reinforcement Students will receive 1–2 key spelling rules each week and get to apply them through interactive practice. Class pacing will be supportive and responsive to the group’s needs. Teaching Style My teaching style is warm, encouraging, and engaging. I focus on building confidence while keeping lessons structured and interactive. I balance direct instruction with games, and student participation. Learner Interaction Learners will interact with me throughout the lesson through: Guided questions and rule “clues” Spelling games and word-building activities Individual participation and whole-group responses Every learner is encouraged to participate, but there’s no pressure — a safe space is created for all to feel comfortable trying!
